D 8: On the Road to Dingley Dell

Catalog Code:
1- 1357
Description:

Made 1912 c. by Tuck & Sons, London, England as D.8 in their Dickens Coaching Zag-Zaw series. Plywood, non-interlocking, 15 figure pieces. Artist: Albert Ludovici, Jr. Long, jolting coach rides necessitated periodic stops for changing horses and refreshments if there was time. In this scene from ch. 28 of Dickens' "Pickwick Papers", Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Tupman have slipped away for "a glass of ale apiece", only to have to hurry back to reboard the departing coach, delayed because Mr. Pickwick's hands were so cold from riding "up top" he couldn't pull from his pocket the coins needed to pay for the ales!   No repairs needed.
