Description:

Very large puzzle cut by Charles Russell, Auburn, MA whom we knew personally and commissioned to cut 40 puzzles (but not this one).in the 1970's.  Interlocking, color line cut with 103 figure pieces, deceptive edges.  Very difficult.  Only 1 knob needed repairing.  Artist is Edmund Henry Osthaus who was born in Hildesheim, Germany in 1858.  He studied at the Royal Academy in Dusseldorf.  In 1883, Osthaus immigrated to the United States, where he became the principal of the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts in Toledo, Ohio. After the school closed, Osthaus devoted himself to painting. Hunting and fishing were his passion, and became the subject of most of his works. However, his specialty was hunting dogs, and he quickly became known for his detailed and life-like portraits of them at work and play.  He died in 1928.  From www.annexgalleries.com
