The Letter to Santa Claus

Catalog Code:
1- 1608
Description:

In her book The Jigsaw Puzzle :Piecing Together the History, footnote 8 to Ch. 3, Anne Williams refers to an advertisement run by Prudence Pride of Deerfield, MA which ran in the November 19 and December 8, 1908 issues of Life Magazine claiming, "I made the original JIGSAW-PUZZLES that set Boston crazy".  Unfortunately, Deerfield is in central and not eastern Mass. so Mr. Pride's "boast" does not hold up.  The handwriting on this puzzle's box is similar to Ms. Pride's and the puzzle is similar to another owned by a Chicago collector and cut by her.  Solid wood, push fit, color line cut, irregular edges to enhance central figure (unusual at the time).  Artist is Alice Beach Winter,  a consummate American Impressionist painter and illustrator. She was considered the equal to her artist-husband Charles Allan Winter (who taught members of The Eight in Gloucester, 1869-1942) and her illustrations for books and commissioned portraits supported the couple for years. Puzzle is disassembled in its box but I have made a cutout mat board frame to hold and display puzzle securely.  I will ship this to the winning bidder if so desired charging only for shipping.
