Mr. Pickwick Received by the Ladies of Bath

Catalog Code:
P- 1285
Description:

Pastime puzzle made by Parker Brothers cutter #15.  Interlocking, cut along color lines with 40 figure pieces.  Artist is Albert Ludovici, Jr. (1852-1932), son of Albert Ludovici Sr.  Ludovici Jr was a genre painter and landscape painter. While Whistler was President of the Royal Society of British Artists, Ludovici fell under his spell and his paintings show Whistler’s influence. Ludovici’s London scenes are particularly Whistlerian in their delicate impressionistic style.  Like his father, Ludovici lived mostly in Paris and his London paintings do in some part reflect the Parisian Boulevard lifestyle of the period.  Thanks to Julian Simon Fine Art Ltd.  Ludovici is noted most for his series of paintings depicting coaching scenes from the days of Dickens. This particular scene was not among the 16 Raphael Tuck & Sons turned into prints, cut into puzzles and sold to Parker Brothers to be cut into puzzles. It is one of four additional prints which, presumably, Tuck printed but did not cut into puzzles.  However, Parker Brothers was able to buy multiple copies of all 4 and produced puzzles from them.
