Taking Mother Over the Top

Catalog Code:
1- 1677
Description:

Unknown maker, cut 1920 c.  Plywood, semi-interlocking, cut along color lines with irregular top-protrusion (assembler not looking for woman’s head when putting together top edge). Artist: The famous Norman Rockwell.  Full title: "Taking Mother Over the Top (Soldier Recounting War Stories to Family)".  Going "over the top" meant after a fierce artillery bombardment, the infantry leaped from their trenches and charged the enemy front through barbed wire, intense machine gun fire, and sustained rifle fire.  Chances of survival were not good.  My father did not have to go "over the top" as he was in an artillery unit firing at the Germans from behind allied lines. He was very good at math and could quickly compute (mentally) the angle needed for artillery to hit its target.  Puzzle has aged with some discolor in the lighter areas. Dark lines along left and bottom edges are shadows from angle of sunlight.
