Artist: Albert Ludovici, Jr. Long, jolting coach rides necessitated periodic stops for changing horses and refreshments if there was time. In this scene from ch. 28 of Dickens' "Pickwick Papers", Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Tupman have slipped away for "a glass of ale apiece", only to have to hurry back to reboard the departing coach.
