Nicholas Departure for Dotheboy's Hall

Catalog Code:
1- 1841
Description:

The color line cutting by Isabel Ayer for this puzzle in 1912c. is superb, probably because the image was so conducive for her cutting style.  For those of us familiar with Nicholas Nickleby, the innocent boys seated on top of the coach are like "lambs beng led to slaughter".  Dickens' expose of the cruelty of the boarding schools for boys in England at the time resulted in the closing of several and improvement in many others.   Dickens was a major social force in England during his life.  Artist is Albert Ludovici, Jr.  Puzzle was sold thru Miss Ayer's store at 294 Washington St, Boston, MA as puzzle #337.
