Rocks--No Rocks

Catalog Code:
1- 1246
Description:

Solid wood, push fit, color line puzzle cut by Margaret Richardson, New York City !909c.  In my opinion, Ms Richardson was the leading puzzle maker in NYC during the 1909 era, with her elongated style.  The title refers to the 2 scenes: the courtship taking place on the rocks by the sea, and the saloon drinking taking place without ice cubes in drinks.  Similar hard drinking by men led to Prohibition.  Nationwide Prohibition lasted from 1920 until 1933. The Eighteenth Amendment—which illegalized the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol—was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1917. In 1919 the amendment was ratified by the three-quarters of the nation's states required to make it constitutional.  Terms like "speakeasies", "saloon", "rocks" were popular back then.
My notes list Ansel Johnson as the artist with 1893 art date.  But I cannot find anything further on such a person who could have done the art work. .
