Zig-Zag puzzle from London, England. Solid wood, partly interlocking and cut along color lines. Per Wout Zwart, a leading Dutch puzzle collector, artist is Cesare Detti (1847-1914). Scene probably inspired by the tales of Robin Hood. Our lady is attempting to cross a small stream wearing an "hour glass corset", bustle, and formal gown down to the ground. Difficult to tell what foot gear she is wearing. Hard to believe she will move to the woods to live with her outlaw husband. Puzzle box has picture of knights tilting.
Because of its solid wood and thin necks, many pieces have broken. I did not try to reglue them because the necks are so thin they would break again. But all the little broken off parts are in the box and the puzzle intact. It just makes assembly more challenging and shows why puzzle cutters moved to plywood starting in the 1910's. Anne Williams also thinks this puzzle might be in the wrong box (I counted pieces and that matches 200 on the box label. She has seen several Pastimes with the same image but titled "Crossing the Brook". Anne suggests, "The young man looks rather foppish, not like an outlaw." Puzzle cutters will put strange titles on puzzles, sometimes different from the name printed on the picture (if any) and not matching the scene. This may well be such a puzzle.
