Our oldest son, Scott, joined men's heavyweight crew his freshman year at Brown University, and rapidly developed into a very fine oarsman, rowing in Brown boats which won at the Eastern Sprints, IRAs and Henley (Ladies Plate), and also in a U.S. National Boat (under 23) which lost only to the Russians at the Rott Zee in Switzerland. After Brown (and a couple years of engineering) he joined the coaching staff at Dartmouth College, becoming head coach of men's heavyweight varsity in 1991, which he coached until 2005 when he moved out to Wisconsin. During the period of time he was involved with crew, he won the Ladies Plate race in Henley, England both as an oarsman in a Brown boat and as the coach of a Dartmouth crew, a rare double achievement. It is no wonder then that I began collecting jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes of crew. As any self-confessed collector would admit, "Any excuse to collect more!"
